I have often asked myself; why is it that I have always had a fascination for digging up facts? It can probably be said that this affinity for fact finding is what led me to my work in the journalism field. Journalism gives license to disclose facts that often times, the subject would rather not be revealed. A phone call from an angry politician, spewing futile threats of liable suits can be gratifying. But deep inside, I have always had an admiration for those who work in the investigations field as a way of life. Those who uncover the truths that are often buried deep in the backyards of our subject’s lives.
In my younger days, my television and movie heroes were the fictitious characters who had a knack for smelling a lie a mile away. I wanted to learn that skill, the skill of being able to know when someone is lying, and how to uncover the truth. At some point in my life, I realized that most of what people say is an altered version of the truth, a half truth, an exaggeration or a downright fabrication. I learned to trust nobody explicitly. I developed a propensity of distrust in people. I became the antithesis of gullible. I took what people said with a grain of salt, feigning agreement and acceptance, while inwardly wondering which part of it was the truth.
My first practical application of the suspicious mind was with the fiancé of my mother. I was in high school at the time, and quite frankly, felt very wary of him. The things he said were not congruent with what I saw with my eyes. His car and his clothing did not match up with the amount of money he claimed he made, and he always seemed to be short of money, borrowing from my mother. He contradicted himself many times in conversations. I did not like the way he looked at me or my sister. I had a bad feeling about him. I suspected he was taking advantage of my mother. I wanted to find out the truth behind his façade, but I had no idea how.
We lived in a closely knit neighborhood on the southwest side of Chicago. It was one of those neighborhoods where everyone seemed to know each other. There were a few Chicago policemen on our block, and I didn’t hesitate to use that to my advantage. I casually asked one of them if he wouldn’t mind just doing some checking on this man. All I had was his name, car make and model and his license plate. My policeman neighbor said he would see what he could find out and let me know.
Lo and behold, several days later I got what I was looking for. My mother’s fiancé turned out to be an unemployed house painter, and had a police record which included shoplifting, molest, and assault. Worst of all, his wife had a restraining order on him after several incidents of him beating her up. Yes, I said wife. Not ex-wife! It was at this point that I realized the value of background checks. The industry of private investigation entails various duties to aid in the collection of information and evidence, which is used to support any legal cases or for private party education and knowledge. Private investigators typically provide their services to lawyers to assist in building criminal cases or defenses. They are also a resource that is often used in major companies and corporations to detect fraudulent activities amongst employees or consumers. One of the most common reasons a private investigator is called upon is for domestic issues. Identity theft, personal relationship conflicts and asset protection are other reasons investigations may be required. Furthermore, it is much more profitable than any other cases an investigator may accept. This service is a tool to be utilized for educational purposes, as well as for protection. Valid information and facts gathered by an investigator can bring about awareness to activities and possible intentions of any given individual. With that, one can make an educated decision or guess whether or not to associate with any one person, company or establishment. It appears today most P.I’s come from various occupations that are inter-related, such as law enforcement, court systems, or other criminal based government establishments. A bona fide private investigator although, is one who does not partake in unethical methods to obtain information, and whose main motive is to gather facts that reveal or lead to the truth of any given matter. ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ Private investigation
1. The skills I have that fit into this business is my ability to take direction, research effectively, problem-solve, work as a team if needed, communicate effectively any information with accuracy, and the skill to keep and open mind versus a narrow mind. I keep myself open to all possibilities, due to my personal life experiences. I also have a “go-getter” and self-motivated attitude.
2. I have never participated in checking an individual’s background, however one has been done on my when I obtained my notary and real estate license. Of course A private investigator Background check would be more accurate and detailed. Why I like private investigation:
3. I have 3 main reasons why being exposed to private investigation appeals to me. The first is, I have a 21-year-old brother who was involved in many crimes, which affected many people. As a consequence, he is incarcerated in McFarland state prison. This further compelled me to return to school and earn my degree in criminal justice. I want to make a difference on any level I possibly can to aid the community in educating themselves, or assisting them is solving their major problems brought about by criminals like my brother. Being apart of a team or establishment that can utilize my skills and later my degree to make a difference is an important goal I have set and will accomplish. The final reason is, I have been exposed to the real-estate industry through my parents all of my life. From many different aspects, I have seen fraud implemented on all levels. This type of behavior disgusts me and has driven me to find a proper way to correct it or make a difference. In my business the reason for fraud is purely monetary. Most crimes I believe are committed for some level of self-gratification. These are the main reasons why being exposed to private investigation interests me. |
